What Size Antler Is Right for My Dog?
Choosing the right size is the single most important thing you can do to make an antler chew safe and long-lasting. Too small, and your dog could fit it in their mouth or swallow a piece. Too big, and a small dog may lose interest. Here's how to get it right.
Quick size chart
Go by your dog's weight rather than their breed. The breeds below are only a rough guide.
- Small Antler (up to 90g): dogs under 10kg, such as Jack Russells, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus and Cavoodles.
- Medium Antler (90g to 150g): dogs from 10kg to 20kg, such as Beagles, Cocker Spaniels and Border Terriers.
- Large Antler (150g to 250g): dogs from 20kg to 35kg, such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Border Collies.
- Extra Large Antler (250g+): dogs over 35kg, such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Huntaways, and power chewers of any size.
Every antler is natural, so the shape, colour and exact weight vary within each size.
Size up for power chewers
If your dog is a determined chewer who tries to crunch through everything, go up one size. A bigger antler is harder to fit fully in the mouth, encourages gnawing rather than biting down hard, and lasts much longer.
The "too big to fit" rule
Whatever size you choose, your dog should not be able to fit the whole antler in their mouth. If they can close their mouth around it completely, it's too small for them.
Puppies
Wait until your puppy's adult teeth have come through, at around 6 months old. Start with the Small Antler and keep the first few sessions short and supervised.
Older dogs and dogs with dental problems
Antlers are hard. If your dog is older, has worn or damaged teeth, or has had dental work, check with your vet before giving them any hard chew.
When to replace an antler
As your dog chews, the antler slowly gets smaller. Keep an eye on it, and once it's small enough to fit fully in their mouth or be swallowed, take it away and replace it with a new one.
