Where Do Tailo's Antlers Come From?
Every Tailo chew starts life in New Zealand, as a by-product of deer culled for pest control. Here's why that matters, both for your dog and for our native forests.
Deer aren't native to New Zealand
Deer were brought to New Zealand in the 1800s, mainly for sport hunting. With plenty of food and no natural predators, their numbers grew quickly, and they spread through forests across the country.
Deer browse on seedlings and the plants that make up the forest understorey. Over time this stops native forests from regenerating and takes away food and shelter from native birds and insects. Today, wild deer are managed as a pest, with hunting and culling used to keep their numbers down.
Turning a by-product into something useful
When deer are culled, their antlers would otherwise go to waste. Instead, we upcycle them into long-lasting natural chews. Each antler is cut into chew-sized pieces and graded by weight into our four sizes, from Small to Extra Large.
Why it matters
- Nothing added: every chew is 100% natural deer antler.
- Local: our antlers come from New Zealand, rather than being shipped in from overseas.
- Less waste: each chew makes use of something that would otherwise be thrown away, as part of work that helps protect native forests.
